The company was founded in Halifax in 1920, then under the name Saint John Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. In 1959, KC Irving bought the shipyard. At the same time, the opening of the world's largest dry dock was celebrated. Then as now, the shipyard was the flagship for the construction of oil tankers , cargo ships and passenger ferries . In 1990 the shipyard received its largest order to build the Halifax-class frigates of the Canadian Navy .

On September 9, 2009, the company received an order to build nine ships for the Canadian Coast Guard , which will complement and support the 121 active Coast Guard ships . The first ships are to be delivered to the Coast Guard in 2011. The delivery of the new ships should be completed by 2014. The order is worth 194 million Canadian dollars .

In 2010 the Arctic Patrol Ship Project was merged with other ship procurements of the Canadian Department of Defense. In addition to the construction of the coast guard ships, the shipyard received a total of $ 25 billion on October 19, 2011 for the development and construction of eight Arctic Patrol ships, as well as fifteen other warships for the Royal Canadian Navy over the next twenty years.
