features

The beetles reach a body length of 3.5 millimeters. The body is only slightly shiny and matt on the upper side and has a very fine point structure everywhere. The wings have fine dotted stripes and black vertical stripes, which are often interrupted and together form oblique spots. The pronotum is yellow, it lacks the dark transverse bands that the similar Haliplus varius has. Basal lines are also missing on the pronotum. The prothorax is unrimmed and heavily punctured.

Occurrence and way of life

The species occurs in large parts of Europe and is absent in the far north and south of northeast Spain and northern Italy. It is rare in Central Europe and only widespread locally. The animals live in clean, stagnant and slowly flowing waters.
