Hall of Clestrain

Hall of Clestrain is a residential building on the Scottish Orkney island of Mainland . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

A previous building existed at the site of the Hall of Clestrain, which was looted in 1725 by the pirate John Gow . The current building was built in 1769 by Patrick Honeyman of Graemsay . The next generation of the family moved to central Scotland, leaving only John Rae senior as deputy at the Hall of Clestrain . The polar explorer John Rae was born there in 1813 as the fourth son . The building was inhabited until 1952 when a storm damaged the roof.

The condition of the building deteriorated, which is also due to its use as a cattle shed in the second half of the 20th century. In 1990 the Hall of Clestrain was added to the Register of Endangered Listed Structures in Scotland. In 2004 the building was featured in the BBC series Restoration , but did not win any money for restoration. In the same year an initiative to save the Hall of Clestrain was founded. So far, however, it has not been possible to acquire sufficient financial resources. In order to prevent the ingress of animals and water, however, the building openings were closed and the roof was temporarily repaired. The condition is classified as bad with high risk.
