The Halligbahn Dagebüll – Oland – Langeneß is a light railway of the State Office for Coastal Protection, National Park and Marine Protection (LKN SH) leading through the North Frisian Wadden Sea from Dagebüll to the Halligen Oland and Langeneß .

history

From 1925 to 1928 the field railway with a gauge of 900 mm was built on a pile embankment. After the opening of the Hindenburgdamm, the tracks were taken over by the light railroad used in its construction . The Lorenbahn went into operation from 1927. The further connection from Oland to Langeness was probably not completed until 1928, recognizable by a stone, which is embedded at the beginning of the Langenesser dam directly on the western edge of Oland with the corresponding year. The railway was built for the transport of building materials for fastening the Halligen and Lahnungen .

Magda Matthiesen, known as Captain Magda, was a truck driver who, from 1945 to 1968, brought mail, merchant goods and holiday guests to Oland and Langeness with an inherited sailing truck . Initially, the carts were driven by sails through the wind, from the mid-1960s they were equipped with gasoline or diesel engines.

Between 2005 and 2009 the line to Oland was rebuilt. The new dam was moved about 65 cm higher so that it can also be driven on when the water level is higher. It is planned to build the dam between Oland and Langeness also higher.

The dam is the most important structure on the route. In the middle, a section is elevated so that foxes cannot get to Oland on the dam to protect the bird life on the Halligen from them.

business

The route leads from the office's building yard in Dagebüll over the sea dike, from there over a dam with pile foundations and stone edge on the lake side to Oland, over the Hallig and an adjoining stone dam with built-in pile yokes to Hallig Langeneß. There are four turnouts between Dagebüll and Oland that make it possible to meet on the single-track route: a stump track on the sea dike in Dagebüll, the passable turnout "1500" - Fifteen hundred, because it is 1.5 km after the start of the route on the dam between Dagebüll and Oland is built in, a stump track on the Olander Sommerdeich and a passable siding below the Olander Terp. Another passable turnout between Oland and Langeness was abandoned after the Second World War, but could still be located on the basis of the remaining foundation piles in the tidal flats until they also disappeared when the new dam next to the existing route was built. Driving is permissive - " on sight " - in any weather. Some of the private lorries are simple flat wagons that can be equipped with benches or armchairs, or lorries that are closed on all sides. These are typically moved with small industrial motors from 4.5 to 9.5 HP. Only the construction vehicles, here exclusively Schöma locomotives with 25 to 65 hp, are heavier and can transport larger loads such as truck trains with basalt stones or larger construction machines.

Hallig residents are allowed to use the dam with their own lorries to run errands on the mainland. This private use is only tolerated and is subject to strict rules from LKN and the insurance company. For example, passenger transport is only permitted for relatives and holiday guests for Olanders and for long-term eaters only for relatives, and spontaneous rides are strictly prohibited. Lorry drivers who spontaneously take people with them can have their driving licenses withdrawn by the authorizing authority, Amt Pellworm .

If wind and weather make it impossible to use the post boat, the railway is also used to deliver mail to the Halligen.
