Hallikar ( Kannada ಹಳ್ಳಿಕಾರ್ ) is a Zebu breed of cattle originally from the Indian state of Karnataka .

description

The Hallikar breed comes from the region of the former princely state of Mysore in the south of what is now Karnataka. Hallikar were mainly bred as work animals and are valued as persistent draft animals. In contrast, the milk yield of the cows is relatively low and averages 541 liters per calf (minimum 225, maximum 1100). In terms of appearance, they are compact, strong, large cattle with long, strong legs. The bulls are about 190 cm tall and weigh 450 kg, the cows reach 170 cm and 425 kg. The color of the animals is gray to light brown. The closely spaced, long, slightly curved horns and the large, very flexible ears are characteristic.

On February 7, 2017, the Karnataka government announced that several native cattle breeds ( Malnad Gidda , Hallikar and Deoni ), as well as sheep breeds (Bannur, Bellari, and sheep breeds) had been released as part of a new program for the “preservation and management of indigenous livestock breeds against the background of climate change” and Deccani) should receive special government funding. Mixing with other cattle breeds should be avoided by breeding them on special farms. The reason given was that imported breeds produced more milk, but were significantly more demanding in terms of feed and more susceptible to disease. The indigenous races listed, on the other hand, are more undemanding and can also survive periods of scarcity better. The project is supported by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).
