Hallyburton House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hallyburton House is a manor house near the Scottish village of Kettins in the Council Area Perth and Kinross . In 2010 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, together with various associated structures, it forms a category A monument ensemble. The associated sundial is classified separately as a category A structure.

history

Hallyburton House was born in the 1680s. Presumably the manor house was redesigned in the course of the 18th century and around the middle of the 19th century. Charles Gordon, 11th Marquess of Huntly, sold the property to the whiskey industrialist Graham Menzies in 1879 . The purchase price was £ 235,000. Menzies commissioned Andrew Heiton with the extensive overhaul of Hallyburton House, which was carried out between 1880 and 1884. Robert Lorimer last revised and expanded the mansion in 1903. The northeast wing was demolished in 1988.

description

Hallyburton House is set on extensive grounds around 700 meters east of Kettins. The large, Tudor-Gothic mansion is set in gardens. From the main facade of the two-story building, which is exposed to the northwest, rises a three-story tower with a higher stair tower in the inner corner. The facades are designed with tracery and tudor arched building openings.

sundial

The sundial in the back garden probably dates from the 17th or early 18th century. It is designed as a Doric column on a low plinth . While the north side of the column is unadorned, the other sides are decorated with gnomons of various sizes and markings. A stone cube with hemispherical recesses and markings rests on it and one gnomon per surface. The top section of the sundial shows thistle motifs. Ceramic tiles with the year 1865 surround the building.
