The Halmahera Rat ( halmaheramys bokimekot ) is on the Indonesian island of Halmahera occurring rodent species from the group of murinae (Murinae). Genus and species were only described in 2013 and named after the distribution area and the place of discovery (Boki Mekot).

features

The Halmahera rat is medium-sized and has a head-to-trunk length of 14.5 to 16.7 cm, a tail length of 12.0 to 13.2 cm and a weight of 72 to 99 g. The fur is brown-gray, rather dark brown on the back and whitish on the belly. The hair is long and thick. Above all on the back there are scattered spiky bristle hairs with whitish tips. The undercoat is short and dense, gray on the back and gray-whitish on the belly. The hairs of the trunk are about 15 to 25 mm long. The vibrissae are long; some are colorless, others black. The eyelids are blackish, the ears brown and covered with very short, soft hair on both the outside and the inside.

Systematics

The Halmahera rat belongs within the subfamily of Old World mice (Murinae) to the Rattini tribe and there to an Indo-Pacific rat clade to which the genera Bullimus , Bunomys , Paruromys , Sundamys and Taeromys also belong. The ancestors of the Halmahera rat likely came to Halmahera during the Middle Miocene when the island collided with the Sangihe Islands northeast of Sulawesi .

At the beginning of 2018, Pierre-Henri Fabre and colleagues described Halmaheramys wallacei, a second species of the genus from the Northern Moluccas .
