The Hamarsfjörður is a fjord in the east of Iceland . It belongs to the east fjords .

It is located west of Djúpivogur , 4 km wide and 6 km into the country. The ring road goes around the fjord. Bragðavellir farm is located at Hamarsfjörður. Old Roman copper coins from the 3rd century were found here in 1905 and 1933. These are the oldest coins found in Iceland. It is unknown whether a Roman ship ended up here on its way to Great Britain , or whether the Vikings brought the coins here later .
