The Hamburg City Mission (the official name is Verein für Innere Mission - Hamburger Stadtmission ) was founded on November 10, 1848 by 60  Hamburg citizens at the suggestion of Johann Hinrich Wichern as the first German city mission, based on the model of the English City Missions. It is the forerunner of ecclesiastical diakonia . Founding members were u. A. the Senator Martin Hieronymus Hudtwalcker and the lawyer August Abendroth . The founding meeting took place in the house of the Patriotic Society . Since 2013, the Hamburg City Mission has been using the name hoffnungsorte hamburg in its external presentation , which is always put in front of the offers. As part of the Diakonie , the goal of the Hamburg City Mission is to help people in material and personal distress through specific offers.

Over 80% of the employees work on a voluntary basis . The Hamburg City Mission operates the following projects:

  • Haus Jona (overnight stay)
  • Marianne Doell House (residential project)
  • Plata / sansa (advice / street work for homeless EU citizens)

  • Room of silence
  • The church cafe (closed 3/2018)

  • Advice center Hamburg center

The Hamburg city mission is the sole shareholder of the WICHERN construction company founded in 1927.

The city missions in Germany work with the Federal Association of Evangelical City Missions in Germany (BVSM) and the Working Group of European City Missions (AGES).
