The Hamburg Thank You Medal (storm surge 1962) is a state award of the State of Hamburg , which was donated on May 8, 1962 by the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City by Senate resolution.

Award requirements

The medal of thanks can be awarded if the recipient has distinguished himself through sustained assistance during and after the storm surge in 1962 . It was explicitly regulated according to Hanseatic tradition that the medal of thanks is not awarded to the citizens of the Hanseatic city. The same applies to the members of the Hamburg fire brigade and other participating state agencies. The medal of thanks was only given to external helpers and members of external aid organizations . Incidentally, the Hamburg Senate has not yet published the award guidelines. This is also no longer to be expected. Therefore, no specific award procedures are known.

Appearance, texture and way of wearing

The bronze medal has a diameter of 32 mm and shows the symbolic representation of a rescue from a storm surge on the front. This symbolism is reflected in the depiction of a rescuer in a small rowing boat pulling a person out of the water. The reverse of the medal shows the Hamburg state coat of arms, which is supported by the inscription: DAS DANKBARE HAMBURG / SEINEN FRIENDS IN DER / NOT + XVII. FEBRUARY 1962 is broken. The medal of thanks is worn on a wide white, red-rimmed and twice red striped ribbon on the upper left side of the chest.

Authority to award

The medal of thanks is awarded by the Senate of the Hanseatic City. The entrusted receives a corresponding certificate with the handing over of the medal.

Award numbers

The awards have since been discontinued. There were around 15,800 awards given to external helpers.
