Hamlin Beach State Park is a state park in the parish of Hamlin in Monroe County, New York , New York , United States. The park covers 1287 acres (5.2 km²) and is located directly on the shores of Lake Ontario . The Lake Ontario State Parkway traverses the park.

history

Hamlin Beach became a park in 1929 after Monroe County purchased 597 acres for $ 169,373. The park was initially called Northwest Beach Park and consisted of the former estate of Charles Wolf and the surrounding farmland. In 1930 the park was renamed Hamlin Beach Park .

During the time the park was owned by the county, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp was established and the workers who lived there built the park's facilities (1935–1941). During the Second World War , the site was used as a prisoner-of-war camp for German prisoners of war from 1944 to 1946. The camp served as a labor exchange, placing workers on farms and in the food industry in the Hamlin area. After the war the camp was closed.

In 1938 the property became the property of New York State and was named Hamlin Beach State Park . After the war, the Lake Ontario State Parkway was extended through the park, making it more accessible. Parking lots have also been built and campsites have been set up.

Remnants of the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps can still be seen today: stone walls, boundaries and pavilions. The CCC had also drained some wetlands in the eastern part of the park.

In the 1970s, the park and especially the beach suffered from severe erosion from storms. State and federal funds were used to rebuild the beaches and jetties were built to prevent further damage. During this time, the establishment of the Yanty Creek Nature Trail , a nature trail, began.

From 2008 to 2014, volunteers (Friends of Hamlin Beach) created a historical educational trail on the history of the camp.

geography

In the east of the park, Yantee Creek flows into Lake Ontario. The area there is relatively swampy and there are two larger bays. The beach stretches west to Cape Devil's Nose . The county line also runs near the west end.

The Devil's Nose is a small mud hill at the west end of the park. The tree-lined hill is part of a larger sand and clay formation that extends about 1 mi (1.6 km) into the lake. The area above the water was originally larger, but the rising water level and erosion has eroded it drastically. The shore is a small but unstable cliff that is closed to visitors.

free time activities

Hamlin Beach State Park has picnic areas and pavilions on the beach, a playground, nature trail, hiking, biking, surfing, and fishing, a 264-pitch campground, a boat ramp, and a snack bar. Depending on the season, there are also opportunities for ice skating and skiing. Swimming is allowed from June to October. The campsites are open from May. Occasionally, the beach is closed when it comes to pollution. There are three parking spaces with a capacity of 2,500 vehicles.
