history

Woodlawn Beach has been a popular bathing beach since the 19th century. Several rail and steamship routes had stops at Woodlawn Beach. There was a hotel, restaurants, dance hall, bowling alley, billiard halls, a toboggan slide (toboggan run) and a 30 acre (12 hectare) picnic area.

Access to the beach became more and more difficult from 1950 because the new owners only allowed private use. The beach wasn't reopened to the public until 1996 when New York State acquired 93 acres (37.6 hectares) of land from Buffalo Crushed Stone in 1996 . The $ 6.3 million was raised by the Trust for Public Land .

The park was administered by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation until 2011 . As savings had to be made, the park was temporarily closed and only reopened in 2011 under management by the municipality of Hamburg. Although the financial situation is still tense, the city has had success in marketing the attractions.

The "2010 Woodlawn Beach Sanitary Survey Report" already recorded possible contamination of the water. In 2011, Woodlawn Beach was ranked the third worst beach in New York for pollution by the Natural Resources Defense Council .

free time activities

The park has a beach, picnic areas and playgrounds, a bar and a restaurant. Kayaks and paddle boards can be borrowed and the park's facilities can be rented for parties and weddings. The lodge is only available for long-term rental. The park is open daily, but swimming is only allowed in the summer months. There is an entrance fee.
