The Hammerlinde was a natural monument in the Annaberg-Buchholz district of Frohnau , directly on the historic Frohnauer Hammer .

description

The hammer linden was a three-stemmed summer linden . The approximately 32 meter high tree was on Sehmatalstrasse in Frohnau. The linden tree, designated as a natural monument, was open to the public, but was partially bricked up and secured with tethers.

history

The tree was around 320 years old. Research by tree experts has confirmed this age. The Frohnauer Hammerlinde came from the end of the 17th century. It was probably planted when the house was built in 1697, which was quite common at the time. The trunk was no longer visible. Due to the backfilling of the surrounding area, it was in the ground. The linden tree was designated as a natural monument in 1937 and entered in the natural monument book of the Chemnitz district administration. In the 1950s, a wooden pedestal was installed several times a few meters above the ground, on which a band played at parties.

In 2016, investigations of the tree revealed a strong infestation with the burn crust fungus , a mildew- causing tree pest. As a result, various measures were taken to maintain the tree. Deadwood was removed and a large part of the treetop was cut back in 2017. This meant that the natural monument should be preserved for another five to ten years. A further investigation in 2018 showed, however, that the hammer linden tree was now infected with another harmful fungus and was too damaged to be preserved. In September 2018, the city administration announced that the tree would be felled before the onset of autumn, as it could no longer carry storms and snow loads and thus the safety for pedestrians and road traffic was endangered. The precipitation took place on September 24, 2018.

A descendant of the tree is to be raised from shoots of the hammer linden that are not infested by the pests.
