Hamster is a slim, easily configurable news and e-mail server for Windows systems .
Hamster was developed as a local server for single-user installations or local networks , where its task is to collect news and mails from several servers (to "hoard") and to provide them sorted in local mailboxes or newsgroups. This makes it easier, for example, to work with clients that are only designed for a single server as an uplink ; they then only have to communicate with hamsters.
Mails to local recipients within the hamster installation are delivered directly without detour via the Internet, which saves transmission capacity with narrowband connections. Hamster also offers a variety of functions for filtering and presorting messages.
history
The original hamster was developed by Jürgen Haible. From its source code , published as free software under the MIT license in 2000 , a programming team under Thomas G. Liesner developed the version known as Hamster Classic .
Jürgen Haible develops the Hamster Playground version . Their differences to the Hamster Classic are listed on his website. With basically similar functionality, they differ considerably in configuration and application.

In addition to various download sources on the Internet, Hamster was included several times in the c't supplement from December 2000 .
Usenet hierarchy
In May 2000 an attempt was made to set up a newsgroup on the subject of hamsters on the German-speaking Usenet to meet the increasing need for communication . However, since the de.comm.software. * Hierarchy in question was currently in a lengthy reorganization process, this request could not be implemented quickly. As a remedy, the completely new top-level hierarchy hamster. * Was initially set up as a temporary solution on a separate news server for discussions about the software. In the beginning, a hamster even served as the network-side server software, although it was not intended as a primarily local server.
The hamster hierarchy was gradually added to the large Usenet servers due to great demand. Groups are currently being offered there in German, English, French and Italian.
