Hanamikoji is a card game by the Japanese game designer Kota Nakayama for two people. The game was published in Japan in 2013 by Takamagahara and was published in 2016 in English by Quick Simple Fun Games and simultaneously as a multilingual version by EmperorS4. In autumn 2017 it was released for German-speaking countries by Kosmos Spiele as a licensed edition of EmperorS4.

Theme and equipment

The game is a competition between two restaurant owners for the favor of the seven most famous geishas in Japan, in order to win them over for their own restaurant and thus attract guests. The players try to get the majority of the favor from the geishas on display with the help of gift cards.

In addition to the game instructions, the game material consists of:

  • 7 geisha cards indicating the respective favor points (2 to 5),
  • 21 gift cards stating the number and allocation to the respective geisha (2 to 5),
  • 7 Favor tokens and
  • 8 action markers.

Style of play

To prepare for the game, the seven geishas are placed in the middle of the table between the two players in an ascending row according to their favor points. A favor token is placed on each of the cards. The gift cards are shuffled and placed next to the geishas as a face-down pile. Then each player receives four different action markers in the respective player color and places them with the active, colored side in front of them.

Phases per round
  • Hand out gift cards
  • Perform actions
  • Rating

The game is played over one or more rounds depending on the respective round result. At the beginning the 21 gift cards are shuffled and one card is removed face down. Each player receives six cards in hand, the remaining eight cards form the draw pile.

A starting player begins his action by drawing a gift card from the draw pile. Then he chooses an active action marker and then carries out the chosen action. Each player has four action markers with which he can perform the following actions:

  • Secret: The player may place a gift card from his hand under the secret marker, which is only revealed at the end of the round and placed on the appropriate geisha.
  • Discard: The player chooses two gift cards from his hand and places them face down under the action marker. These cards are not scored at the end of the round.
  • Offer: The player chooses three gift cards from his hand and places them face up in front of him. The opponent chooses one of the cards and places it on his side with a geisha. The player himself may place the other two cards on his side with the appropriate geishas.
  • Exchange: The player chooses four gift cards from his hand and places them face up as two pairs in front of him. The opponent selects a pair from these and places them on his side with a geisha. The player himself may put the other on his side with the appropriate geishas.
Geisha

After the action has been taken, the action marker is turned over and it is the other player's turn. When both players have performed their four actions in any order, scoring begins. To do this, the respective card is first revealed under the “Gift” action marker and placed on the respective geisha on the respective player's side. Then the number of gifts is counted for each geisha, starting with the purple geisha ("Ayane"). The person on whose side there are more cards or gifts wins the favor of the respective geisha and the respective favor marker is pushed in his direction on the geisha card. If the game is played over several rounds, the favor marker remains unchanged with one of the players in the following round in the event of a tie, but moves to the other player if there is a majority of the other player.

The game ends immediately if, after scoring, a player fulfills one of the following two victory conditions:

  • The player has the favor of four (or more) geishas, or
  • the player has 11 (or more) favor points from geishas.

If neither of the two victory conditions is met after a round, another round is played. The gift cards are shuffled and dealt again and the action tokens are turned over again. The game is played until at least one player fulfills one of the victory conditions. If both players meet one of the conditions, the player with the higher number of favor points wins. If after three rounds no player fulfills one of the victory conditions, the player with the higher number of favor points also wins and in the event of a tie the game ends in a draw.
