Handbook of the historical book collections
The handbook of historical book holdings is a basic reference work for the knowledge of the old holdings of the libraries in Germany , Austria and Switzerland . The editions for Germany and Austria were inspired by the Anglicist Bernhard Fabian, who teaches in Münster, and appeared from 1991 to 2001 in three departments at Georg Olms Verlag . A fourth section offers descriptions of the holdings of books from the German-speaking area (" Germanica ") in various libraries in Europe, sorted by country.
All volumes are also available on CD-ROM and online. Over 1200 employees wrote the articles on the individual libraries. The articles have a uniform structure:
- 1. Administrative-technical data such as address, possible uses and directions
- 2. Inventory history
- 3. Inventory structure according to centuries, languages and systematic structure
- 4. Catalogs
- 5. Literature on the history of the library and its holdings.
The edition for Switzerland was also published in 2011 by Georg Olms Verlag (handbook of historical book holdings in Switzerland, published by the Zurich Central Library ).
The sections
- Handbook of historical book collections in Germany (27 volumes)
- Handbook of historical book collections in Austria (4 volumes)
- Handbook of the historical book collections in Switzerland (3 volumes):
- Vol. 1: Cantons of Aargau to Jura
- Vol. 2: Cantons of Lucerne to Thurgau
- Vol. 3: Cantons of Uri to Zurich
- Handbook of German historical book collections in Europe (12 volumes)
A manual for South Tyrol is also planned .
Some libraries have made the articles in the manual available in unchanged or modified form on their websites. The manual for the historical book collections in Switzerland is available in the form of three large PDF files (one file per volume) on the website of the Zurich Central Library.
criticism
The manual has clear gaps, as some very valuable collections (especially aristocratic libraries such as the Fürstlich Fürstenbergische Hofbibliothek zu Donaueschingen or the collections of Count Waldburg ) could not be taken into account at the request of the owners. In some cases there are also no archives, museums or smaller church institutions libraries.
After the conversion, the online version was inadequately edited and some sections are missing compared to the printed version (e.g. the end of the volumes Baden-Württemberg and Saarland A – H and Baden-Württemberg and Saarland T – Z as well as the Descriptions of the special collections of the Biblioteca Vaticana in the Italy volume).
The online version offers the opportunity to update the contributions to the individual libraries. However, only very limited use is made of this offer. In many cases, the information in the manual is already obsolete today, after around 20 years, some libraries no longer exist or have merged into larger library structures. A revision of the online version therefore appears to be urgently required.
