A hand hook (also known as a shower hook or sack hook ) is an aid for gripping, moving and carrying jute sacks , bales and other heavy packages. It was primarily used in port handling prior to containerization . The hand hook is only used for packages that cannot be damaged by this aid.

In addition to its use in port handling, the hand hook is also used by shipping companies and handling fish crates in fishing ports . In forestry, it is also called packing hook . In the meat processing industry, it is an aid for moving large pieces of meat and the hunter uses it to retrieve game that has been shot . In the latter two cases, the hand hooks are made of hygienically harmless material.

If there was a risk that the hand hook would damage the jute sack so much that its contents could trickle out, the sugar swatter was used in its place . This was particularly the case with fine-grained materials such as sugar. Another tool used to move jute sacks was the grief .
