Hand pumps are pumps that are operated manually (by hand). They are used to lift liquids or gases or to transport them through a system.
Types and examples
Air and liquid pumps
Most hand pumps are air pumps , the small size of which allows them to be held in the hand. It is often found on a bicycle . A hand pump is between 15 and 25 cm long. Other hand pumps are small air pumps with a weak air flow, e.g. B. used for balloon inflation.
There are also traditional water pumps with a handle that acts as a lever , so-called lever pumps . The external protection of the pump mechanism is guaranteed by a jacket made of weather-, pressure- and shock-resistant material. In its simplest form, the jacket is a cylinder that can also be designed with decorative elements. These hand pumps are made of cast iron , steel or aluminum . On the side of the pump housing there is a downwardly curved drain to fill the water into buckets or other vessels.
The fire brigade used similar equipment, only slightly larger, in the 19th century . They were used to transport extinguishing water from a suction point to a source of fire. The lever was 1.5 to 2 meters long and was made of wood (oak, beech, chestnut), to increase the efficiency of the manpower, it had two handles and was moved up and down.
fitness device
A hand pump is also a small fitness device made of foam on the outside and metal on the inside. It has a curled, pressed flat shape. The two parts are pressed together to strengthen the hand and forearm muscles.
