Ems-Hase Canal

Former course of the canal

The Ems-Hase Canal (also known as Hanekenkanal or Emskanal ) is a side canal built between 1824 and 1828 between Hanekenfähr near Lingen (Ems) and Meppen in Lower Saxony (Germany). The canal ran from the Ems near Hanekenfähr, parallel to the east of the Ems to the Hase near Meppen, in order to bypass the many meanders of the Ems. It was about 25 kilometers long, with a water level of 16 meters and a water depth of 1.5 meters. In the course of the canal, four locks (35 × 6 m) were built to keep the water flowing. At the junction from the Ems in the backwater of the newly built Hanekenfähr fixed weir, only a gate was initially built to keep floods away from the canal. It was later converted into a chamber lock so that the water level in the canal was independent of the fluctuations in the Ems water level. Since 1899, most of the canal, after widening and deepening, has been part of the Dortmund-Ems Canal .

Ems-Hase Canal in Meppen

In Hanekenfähr, 560 meters of the old canal and in Meppen 870 meters and a lock ( coupling lock ) have been preserved in their original state. The part in Meppen is used today to discharge the seepage water from the Dortmund-Ems Canal. These old canals are among the so-called other federal inland waterways under the jurisdiction of the Meppen Waterways and Shipping Office .
