Hang (empress)

Empress Hang ( Chinese  杭 皇后 , Pinyin Háng Huàng hòu , born 1427; died 1456) was a Chinese imperial chief wife of the Ming dynasty , married to the emperor Jingtai .

Surname

The Chinese name is 杭 (Hang), Huánghòu (皇后) is the title.

Life

Hang was originally a concubine of Prince Zhu Qiyu (朱 祁 鈺; Jingtai). When his older brother Zhengtong was captured by the Oirats (Mongols) in 1449, the newly installed Emperor Jingtai Hang was promoted to chief wife. Jingtai did not have a son with his first wife and empress. In May 1452 Hang's son was declared heir to the throne and Hang, who was now the mother of the Crown Prince, was promoted to the dignity of Empress. She died in 1456, shortly before the death of her son and the deposition of her husband.
