Johannes Köppen (* 1957 in Herne ) is a German triathlete . He was amateur world champion in paratriathlon on the Ironman distance and the Ironman 70.3 distance.

Life

During his military service, Köppen found his way through football to endurance sport. During an aid operation, at the age of 26, he was hit by a car on a hard shoulder of a motorway and has been paraplegic ever since. He studied biology and was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD . Later he mainly devoted himself to sport.

In 1997 he started his first triathlon. In 2005 he was the first German wheelchair athlete to complete an Ironman distance with 11:50:34.

From 2006 to 2008 there were three participations in the Ironman Hawaii . In 2007 and 2008 he became world champion in the handbike class in Hawaii in 11:29:15 hours and 11:16:43 hours.

In 2009 he successfully took part in the Race Across America with a handbike team (Team Can Be Venture: Hannes Köppen, Vico Merklein , Carlos Moleda ( fr ), Patrick Doak ). In a time of 8 days, 9 hours and 19 minutes, a handbike team was able to complete the 5000 km for the first time within the official time limit of 9 days for cyclists.
