The Hanover market houses around 55 fixed sales stands. In addition to fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and bread, the range includes some delicatessen shops, flower and consumer goods stores and a tobacco shop . A limited number of restaurants can also be found among the other shops. On Saturday there is also a farmers' market with over 20 stalls where food producers from the area around Vienna sell their products, but other market vendors also sell their goods. Due to the high proportion of stand operators with a migration background from the oriental-Islamic region , the market receives a lot of the atmosphere of a southern bazaar . Sometimes special events such as carnival parades, summer and autumn festivals as well as barbecue and game weeks are organized.

Administration and operation

It is an urban market and is managed by the Market Office of the City of Vienna (Municipal Department 59). As a result of the decentralization of the administration in Vienna, market matters are in the competence of the municipal districts. The Brigittenau district is responsible for the administration and operation of the Hanover market and has to provide the necessary funds from the district budget. A market advisory board was set up as an organ of the elected regional representation to discuss any problems that arise. The meetings of the market office, the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, the political representatives of the district and the working group of market parties (ARGE Hannovermarkt) take part.

history

Its predecessor, the Brigittamarkt , had existed since 1850 on Brigittaplatz in front of the church of the same name . On September 11, 1905, the magistrate issued a proclamation “... concerning the relocation of the grocery store located on Brigittaplatze to Kluckygasse , Webergasse and Hannovergasse on XX. Districts ". With the exception of the wooden huts and meat stalls, all goods and stalls had to be set up in the morning and removed in the evening seven times a week. In 1913 the market was moved to its current location, where the City of Vienna leased the property from Klosterneuburg Abbey , which at that time owned a large number of areas in Brigittenau and some of it still has today. It was not until 1930 that the market was officially named Hannovermarkt . The market is - like the Hannovergasse - after the royal family of Hanover named in the Austrian-Prussian War on the side of Austria stood. After the defeat of Königgrätz (1866), she fled to Vienna with her army.

During the Second World War , the market was badly damaged by the effects of the war, but it was rebuilt soon after 1945. At the beginning of the 1960s, the Hanover market was completely rebuilt. The uniform stands reflect the design of that time. With over 90 market stalls, it was at its largest at that time. In 2003 the market was reduced in size and the stands were renovated with EU funding. The infrastructure was also brought up to date and the hygienic standards of the market stalls were improved.

At the edge of the market there is a memorial stone for the Gasthaus Ockermüller, which was located there until the Second World War. The negotiations took place there - especially between the town councilor Lorenz Müller and Mayor Karl Lueger - which resulted in Brigittenau becoming an independent district in 1900.
