Life

Schimansky grew up in Stralsund and Rostock and studied agriculture at the University of Rostock from 1968-72. 1972–77 he worked in the grain industry, but had already drawn intensively during school and university and received suggestions from Johannes Müller . From 1974 he was supported by Gerhard Kettner , whose master class at the Academy of the Arts of the GDR in Berlin he was from 1977 to 1980. Since then he has lived in Berlin. Since the end of the GDR, Schimansky has used the new freedom to travel and make contacts throughout Europe.

Hanns Schimansky first drew figurative and observed everyday situations as well as landscapes. Over the years, however, he reduced the representation more and more and developed his own graphic language from abstraction. By starting to fold his drawings while he was working and partially unfolding them again at the end of the work, he also developed his own three-dimensionality of the drawing.
