The Hans-Haffner- Observatory belongs to the association "Natural Science Laboratory for Students at the FKG eV" and is operated as a school and university observatory jointly by the Friedrich-Koenig-Gymnasium , Würzburg and the Department of Astronomy at the University of Würzburg .

In addition to scientific observation of the sky, including contributions to the study of quasars , the observatory is also available to interested students. Observation evenings for visitors take place at irregular intervals.

history

In 2006 the idea to build a school observatory arose. With the help of students, parents and teachers from the Friedrich-Koenig-Gymnasium, the observatory was built and inaugurated in 2009. In 2012 the observatory was named after the astronomer Hans Haffner .

In 2013, the project group "Fluctuations in brightness of active galaxy nuclei" won the research prize "School meets science", endowed with 20,000 euros, which is awarded by the Robert Bosch Foundation . In 2016 the observatory was expanded with a small extension and a radio telescope .

activities

The main tasks of the observatory are:

  • Access to astronomical observation possibilities for students of the Friedrich-Koenig-Gymnasium
