Hans-Jörg Schmidt

Hans-Jörg Schmidt (* 1953 in Halle an der Saale ) is a German journalist and book author .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a mechanical engineer in his native Halle, he first worked as a trainee at the regional radio station of Radio DDR . He later studied journalism in Leipzig and subsequently worked in various editorial offices at the GDR radio in Berlin , most recently in the Eastern Europe department of the foreign policy editorial office. In 1990 he was sent to Prague as Czechoslovakia correspondent .

After the end of the GDR and with it the radio of the GDR, Schmidt stayed in Prague and worked as a freelance journalist. Today he writes as a correspondent and commentator for Die Welt Berlin, the Sächsische Zeitung Dresden and the news agency KNA Bonn. He has also written two books about the Czech Republic so far .

As part of the German-Czech Journalism Award 2018, Schmidt was honored with the first special award for many years of outstanding journalistic activity.
