Hans-Jakob Siber (born September 4, 1942 ) is a Swiss director, self-taught paleontologist and entrepreneur.

Life

Hans-Jakob Siber completed his A-Matura (ancient Greek and Latin), went to the USA and studied theater and film at Montana State University .

After returning to Switzerland, Siber founded the company Siber + Siber, which trades in minerals and fossils, with his father Hans Siber and his brother Edward. Siber initially worked as a director and produced experimental films between 1968 and 1972. However, he did not earn any money with it.

He then turned to paleontology, studied literature on fossils and began digging his own. In the 1980s he excavated skeletons of fossil baleen whales in Peru . Later he dug up the fossilized remains of a predatory dinosaur (Allosaurus "Big Al") and herbivorous dinosaurs (including Stegosaurus , Diplodocus) in Wyoming (USA) . He was also interested in petrified trees.

Siber founded the Aathal Dinosaur Museum in a disused factory building in Aathal, Canton Zurich, which opened in 1992. Here, among other things, 18 life-size dinosaur skeletons and dinosaur models are shown. Siber organized several special exhibitions there and was the initiator of a scientific symposium on stegosaurs in 2009. Siber and his museum team work a. a. with the University of Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich).

Awards

On the occasion of their 89th annual meeting in Aathal, the Swiss Paleontological Society awarded him the Amanz Gressly Award for his significant services to the excavation of dinosaurs, their research and the associated knowledge transfer.
