The Patterson Glacier is a 22 km long valley glacier in the Boundary Ranges in Alaska (USA). The glacier was named in 1879 after Carlile Pollock Patterson (1816-1881), the 4th superintendent of the US Coast and Geodetic Survey .
geography
The 56 km² Patterson Glacier is located within the Tongass National Forest in the Alaska Panhandle . The glacier tongue is 25 km northeast of Petersburg . Similar to the neighboring Baird Glacier, the glacier forms a western outlet of the Stikine Icecap . The glacier's nutrient zone is at an altitude of 1400 m and borders the LeConte glacier in the east . The 1.1 km wide Patterson Glacier initially flows in a northwest direction and then turns to the southwest. The glacier does not reach the sea, but ends at about 50 m height at the glacial fringing lake Patterson Lake , which is drained over the 14 km long Patterson River to Thomas Bay , a side bay of Frederick Sound . In the last 30 years the glacier has retreated more and more, so that the lake at the edge of the glacier has grown steadily. The annual retreat rate is around 40 m.

The easiest way to get to the Patterson Glacier is by seaplane from Petersburg to the Glacier Edge Lake. Alternative access options from Thomas Bay require the use of packrafts .
