The Frederick Sound , also called Prince Frederick Sound , is a strait in the panhandle of the US state Alaska .
It is located in the Alexander Archipelago and runs between Admiralty Island and the mainland in the north and Kupreanof Island in the south. Frederick Sound begins in the west at Chatham Strait and merges into Dry Strait in the southeast . The Stephens Passage flows into the sound at the northernmost point.
George Vancouver named the sound in 1794 after Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany .
The Alaska Marine Highway ferries operate in Frederick Sound and call at Petersburg there.
