The Baird Glacier is a 47 km (including source glacier) long valley and outlet glaciers in the Boundary Ranges in Alaska (USA) and British Columbia (Canada). The glacier was named in 1887 after Spencer Fullerton Baird (1823-1887), an American naturalist.
geography
The glacier tongue of the Baird Glacier is located 35 km north-northeast of Petersburg in the Alaska Panhandle . The Baird Glacier drains part of the glacier area of the Stikine Icecap to the west towards the sea. The nutrient area of the glacier is on the Canadian side east of Boundary Peak 73 at an altitude of about 1700 m . The glacier initially flows south and then turns west. It crosses the border into Alaska and then flows 35 km in a west-southwest direction before ending at Thomas Bay , a side bay of Frederick Sound . The US portion of the glacier is in the Tongass National Forest . The average glacier width is 2.2 km. Tributary glaciers are North Baird Glaciers and Oasis Glaciers from the right and Witches Cauldron from the left.
tourism
The Baird Glacier can be reached from Petersburg by excursion boat. There is a lookout point not far from the glacier tongue. In 2015, the glacier was created by a rapid withdrawal of a connected with the sea Glacial Lake , of the actual glacier from the terminal moraine separates. As a result, the glacier ice surface can no longer be reached on foot from the terminal moraine. Small packrafts are a way to get to the glacier anyway.
