Hans-Martin Ihme

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans-Martin Ihme (born August 15, 1934 in Montreal , Canada; † 2010 in Kiel ) was a German physicist and visual artist who is known for his program- controlled light art objects , with which he built a bridge between art and technology.

life and work

Ihme came to Germany in 1937 and graduated from high school in 1954. He completed his physics studies at the University of Kiel in 1960 with a diploma. Ihme then worked at the Institute for Applied Physics there until 1999 as a scientific employee in the field of marine measurement technology . The development of the Kiel sea probe for pressure, temperature and conductivity as well as the development of microprocessor-controlled, self-immersing probes are associated with his name.

Parallel to his scientific work, Ihme began working on program-controlled light kinetic objects in 1968, with which he gained artistic recognition. Until his death he devoted himself to the development of his "alternators", as he called them. The controlled sequence of light points creates movement patterns. They derive their effect from the ephemeral geometric orders that appear and then disappear again - as if controlled by chance - and which make one think of crystalline structures.

Since 1974 Ihme was a member of the Federal Association of Visual Artists.
