Hans-Otto Leilich

Hans-Otto Leilich (born November 28, 1925 - † June 19, 2015 ) was a German engineer and university professor.

Life

After studying electrical engineering , Leilich received his doctorate in 1956 with the thesis Problems of Magnetic Head Construction in Digital Drum Memories with Hans Piloty at the Technical University of Munich . There Leilich worked from 1952 to 1956 in the construction of the PERM . He mainly dealt with drum storage systems, in particular with the development of magnetic heads and writing and reading electronics. Then Leilich switched to the Telefunken company , where he worked on the construction of the TR4 large computer system and finally became technical director. In 1962 he moved to the USA as an advisory engineer for IBM research.

In 1968 Leilich was appointed to the chair for data processing at the Technical University of Braunschweig , which was set up in 1963, but had failed to be filled due to a lack of suitable candidates. He introduced the data technology course within the electrical engineering course and, alongside Horst Herrmann and Ernst Henze, was one of the founding fathers and advocate of the establishment of the computer science course in 1972 at the TU Braunschweig. His institute, today's Institute for Data Processing and Communication Networks , formed the link between computer science and electrical engineering. Up to his retirement in 1991, questions of memory and computer architecture played a central role in his research. Leilich played a leading role in the large-scale search computer (SURE), relational database machine (RDBM) and supercomputer for numerical applications ( SUPRENUM ) projects.

Since 1986 he has been a full member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society .
