Hans-Peter Schmitz (musician)

Hans-Peter Schmitz (born November 5, 1916 in Breslau ; † March 16, 1995 in Berlin ) was a German flautist and university teacher.

Life

After studying in Berlin in 1935/36 with Gustav Scheck , Schmitz became principal flutist with the Hamburg Nordmark Orchestra for two years, before studying musicology in Halle (Saale) . From 1943 to 1950 he worked as a solo flutist with the Berlin Philharmonic , then mainly as a university professor (1953 to 1972 professor at the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold , 1971 to 1983 at the Berlin University of the Arts ).

Among the publications by Schmitz, his two-volume Flute Theory (1955) should be emphasized, and he was also active as an editor, for example of the flute sonatas by Georg Friedrich Handel as part of the Halle Handel Edition .
