Hans-Peter Schwarz (* 1945 in Bielefeld ) is a German art historian . He is the founding rector of the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).

Life

After studying visual communication at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, Hans-Peter Schwarz studied art history , modern German literature and European ethnology with a degree in designer . It was in 1982 at the University of Marburg with a thesis on artists' houses in the tension between farm and city for Dr. phil. PhD .

From 1983 to 1990 he was a curator at the German Architecture Museum Frankfurt (DAM) in Frankfurt am Main . After various teaching posts in Marburg, Trier, Frankfurt and Darmstadt, he received in 1994 a call to a professorship at the College of Design Karlsruhe (HfG) .

From 1992 to 2000, Schwarz was also director of the media museum belonging to the Center for Art and Media Technology in Karlsruhe (ZKM) . In 2000 he became rector of the Zurich University of Art and Design (HGKZ) .

In 2005 he was elected the founding rector of one of the largest art schools in Europe, the newly founded Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) , which started operations on August 1, 2007.
