Hans-Rainer Duncker , (born July 1, 1933 ) is a German anatomist and zoologist . He is professor emeritus for anatomy and cell biology at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen .

life and work

Duncker studied biology, medicine and anthropology at the universities of Hamburg, Tübingen, Kiel and Vienna and received his doctorate in Kiel in 1964 (Dr. rer. Nat.). In 1967 he received his doctorate in medicine in Hamburg and habilitated there in 1969 in anatomy. In 1971 he became professor of anatomy in Gießen and retired there in 2001.

He researched the extracutaneous pigmentation of lizards ( comparative anatomy , embryology ) and the functional morphology and evolution of the lung-air sac system in vertebrates, from fish and amphibians to reptiles, birds and mammals.

After his retirement he mainly dealt with evolutionary biology anthropology . He sees the cultural evolution of humans as a non- Darwinian evolution based on the flexibility of the association areas of the cerebral cortex , a non-genetically determined area, and the transmission of ideas and skills from one generation to the next.

In 1991/92 he was President of the German Zoological Society .
