Hans-Siegfried Schuster

Hans-Siegfried Schuster (born November 27, 1910 in Grassau in the Altmark ; † October 16, 2002 ) was a German ancient orientalist .

Schuster, son of pastor Paul Schuster, attended the city high school in Halle and studied ancient oriental studies at the University of Leipzig since 1930 . Here was Benno Landsberger his teacher, after his emigration Landsberger he was in 1936 Johannes Friedrich doctorate. He then worked as an assistant until 1937. After an accident, he worked in the Wehrmacht administration from 1939 to 1945. From 1946 Schuster was an assistant at the Oriental Institute of the University of Leipzig, in 1960 he received a lectureship. Schuster taught not only ancient oriental studies, but also Arabic and Turkish studies. At the end of the war, it is thanks to him that part of the clay tablet collection of the Leipzig Institute was saved, as well as the reconstruction of the library that was destroyed during the war. When the Berlin Wall was built, he was not in the GDR and did not return there. From January 1962 Schuster had a "refugee assistant position" at the University of Cologne , where he received his habilitation on January 22, 1964 and was appointed professor and scientific adviser on April 3, 1968.

His scientific work is primarily connected with the study of the Hattic .
