Works

Initially, Hans-Ulrich Brunner worked purely figuratively. In the context of the confrontation with the New Objectivity, the New Objectivity , which was taking place at this time (beginning of the 1970s) , he sought and found new approaches for his painting beyond pop art and photorealism. Although Hans Brunner never completely detached himself from the object, he soon managed to use his creative means largely freely and to deal with them uninhibited and painterly. His painting is mostly done from the head, without a template, without a model. This ensures him a spontaneous act of painting, which repeatedly lets the medium of painting come to the fore. Stylistically, it is unbound and cannot be classified anywhere.

His painting material is egg tempera in connection with thin layers in oil. In this way, he creates a broad painterly spectrum from massive, juxtaposed surfaces in primitive technique to the thinnest of glazes.

four seasons II

This is particularly evident in his first major, important cycle, his bullfighting series Ronda I – XV from 1981 to 1983, but also in his pairs I – VII (1986) of the toro solo series from 1995/96 and in four seasons (1986/87).

Several picture cycles were created: 1972 to 1976: Tausendsassas, Brunner's most monumental work and other large-format works with groups of figures, mostly people from close friends: Hansi Sprenger, Broderick Price, Peter Herbrich.

The Ronda cycle, which is very important for Hans Brunner, begins with Ronda I (1981) and ends with Ronda VIII (1983). In 1987 the last one was built, Ronda XIII.

1985 to 1987 the series of pair pictures, Kleines Paar, I – VIII.

1987 a series of small-format portraits: Sabine Brunner, Alfred Brunner, Peter Herbrich, Hakon Lingner, Hansi Sprenger as well as Bleierne Sonne and four seasons I and II.

The cycle The Group begins in 1990 and ends with songlines, a large-format picture (190 × 300 cm), 1991.

1993: Machu Pichu , Papa Leone and Otto with friends . After remembering a trip to Malta, Hans-Ulrich Brunner painted in 1995: Horse in Water I and II.

Then the cycle of toro solo pictures emerges : toro solo I to VII, 1995 and 1996.
