Hans-Werner Pia

Hans-Werner Pia (born January 26, 1921 in Bochum ; † July 9, 1986 in Gießen ) was a German physician , specialist in neurosurgery and university professor.

Life

From 1939 Pia studied medicine at the Philipps University in Marburg . In 1945 he passed his state examination and began his medical assistantship in Marburg. In 1946 he became an assistant to Professor Wilhelm Tönnis at the Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum-Langendreer and began his neurosurgical training. After studying in Stockholm with Professor Herbert Olivecrona , he returned to his clinical teacher and accompanied Tönnis in 1952 and to the University of Cologne . In 1953, Pia moved to the Justus Liebig University in Gießen , where she took over the management and development of the neurosurgical department. In 1956 he completed his habilitation. In 1961 he was appointed associate professor and in 1962 full professor of neurosurgery. In 1961 he was appointed director of the neurosurgical clinic at the University of Giessen. In 1967 and 1968 Pia was Dean of the Medical Faculty in Giessen.

Based on the studies on the pituitary gland, hypothalamus and brain stem, Pia has been dealing with the problem of central dysregulation since 1961. Pia has recorded its clinical experience in over 300 scientific publications.
