Hans Asplund
Hans Karl Otto Asplund (born August 16, 1921 in Utö , Sweden ; † January 8, 1994 in Lund ) was a Swedish architect and professor at the Lund Technical University .
Hans Asplund was the son of the architect Gunnar Asplund , who initially featured buildings in the neoclassical style and who later became one of the pioneers of Swedish modernism . Hans Asplund himself was a modernist for most of his creative period as an architect and teacher. His most striking projects include the town house in Eslöv and an extension to the Nordiska Kompaniet department store in Stockholm.
Hans Asplund became known as one of the possible creators of the term brutalism . He used this around 1950 as a joking comment on the Villa Göth in Uppsala , which his colleagues Bengt Edman and Lennart Holm had designed. The origin of the word goes back to the French béton brut , which literally means "raw concrete".
Asplund later developed into a critic of modernism . In 1980 he published the book Farväl till functionalismen (“Goodbye Functionalism”), in which he systematically listed what, in his opinion, made up the shortcomings of modernism.
