Hans Bachmann (biologist)

Johann Bachmann (born April 2, 1866 in Lieli LU , † February 20, 1940 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss hydrobiologist .

Life

First a primary school teacher, then for a short time a priest and private tutor, Bachmann began studying natural sciences at the University of Basel after graduating from the Lucerne Cantonal School . First he studied mathematics and physics, then turned to biology . After receiving his doctorate in 1895, he taught natural history at the Lucerne Cantonal School from 1892 to 1936 . In addition to this activity, he carried out hydrobiological studies and promoted this research area in Switzerland. He researched the phytoplankton , u. a. in comparative studies in Scotland, Russia, Greenland and East Africa. He also founded a lake type theory for Switzerland.

Bachmann was President of the Hydrobiological Commission of the Swiss Natural Research Society and later President of the Natural Research Society Lucerne. In 1924 he was made an honorary doctorate from the ETH Zurich .
