Hans Bellinghausen (born April 8, 1887 in Koblenz , † March 27, 1958 ibid) was a German historian, archivist and local researcher from the Rhineland.

Career and work

After graduating from high school, Bellinghausen studied history at the then Empress Augusta Gymnasium in Koblenz (today's Görres Gymnasium ) at the universities of Munich , Berlin and Bonn . In 1914 he received his doctorate with a two-volume specialist thesis on the city of Koblenz. Bellinghausen took part in the First World War. In 1920 he entered the service of the city of Koblenz. For over 30 years he headed the press office, the statistical office and the city archive of Koblenz. From 1935 to 1942 he also acted as library director.

During the severe fires in the war years of 1943/1944, Bellinghausen rescued valuable holdings from the scientific library and documents from the burning library building on the Danne in Koblenz at great personal risk. A love of his homeland and loyalty to his home inspired him for almost fifty years of his historical research. His knowledge can be found in historical, folkloric and local history, printed in 1430 in magazines and brochures that are kept in the Koblenz city archive. Bellinghausen is the author of the standard work "2000 Years of Koblenz", which was published between 1914 and 1973 in six editions (1914, 1922, 1927, 1950, new editions in 1971 and 1973 by Hans Bellinghausen (son)). In addition, he founded the “Zeitschrift für Heimatkunde of the administrative districts of Koblenz and Trier” in 1920 and the “Koblenzer Heimatblätter” and the “Rheinische Heimatblätter” in 1924, all of which he headed for many years. In addition to the standard work "2000 Years of Koblenz", Bellinghausen also published numerous other books such as the revision of the two Koblenz volumes of the "Rheinischer Antiquarius" , the two urban history volumes "Alt-Koblenz" and "Koblenz, the city of the Rhine and Moselle bridges" as well as the documentary work " Koblenz - then and now ". Bellinghausen was a member of the Society for Rhenish History . Throughout his life he was committed to local studies as a subject matter in schools.

Bellinghausen was politically German national. He turned against the French occupation and against a separation of the Rhineland. In the Third Reich, his anti-Semitic sentiments and closeness to the National Socialists can be clearly read from a series of articles in the "Koblenzer Nationalblatt".

After the Second World War he was imprisoned by the French in Diez an der Lahn for three years . In the Neuendorf district of Koblenz , a street is named after Hans Bellinghausen.

His son Dr. med. Hans Bellinghausen jun. (June 13, 1921 - February 3, 1997) practiced as a doctor in Koblenz, re- edited the work 2000 Years of Koblenz , written by his father, and published smaller essays on the city's history.
