Hans Bracher

Hans Bracher (born September 18, 1909 in Büren an der Aare ; † November 13, 1955 in Solothurn ) was a Swiss architect who owned offices in Solothurn and, with his partner Willy Frey, in Bern. Bracher worked from the 1930s to the 1950s; with his reduced design attitude, one can see him as a forerunner or pioneer of the Solothurn School .

Education and employment

Hans Bracher, who spent school and youth in Bern, studied after graduating from the ETH Zurich , where he graduated from Salvisberg in 1932 . In 1934 he was able to open his own office after winning the Solothurn Cantonal School competition . In 1938, given the good order situation, he was able to open a branch office in Bern and took in a partner, Willy Frey, and in 1954 Eggers joined as a partner.

The canton school in Solothurn also became his main work, which he also had to deal with throughout his entire professional life, delayed by the Second World War, because the final inauguration only took place with the final completion of the auditorium a few months after his untimely death, in spring 1956. The canton school is one of the key modern buildings in the canton of Solothurn. The more than 200 m long classroom block with the adjacent break and gym wing was congenially supplemented by Barth & Zaugg with a cafeteria and library in 1988 and by Fritz Haller with the natural science wing in 1992 .

In the 1940s, the production facilities of Autophon AG were another testimony to classic modernism in the canton. In addition to school buildings, the office also built the Nordmann department store, the Diakonissenhauskirche Bern and the parish hall in Bözingen in the 1950s.
