Hans D. Pflug

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans D. Pflug (* 1935 in Berlin ) is a German physical chemist . In later years he wrote novels, stories and satires under the name John D. Wolfringer, now lives in Frankfurt am Main . There he founded the Association of Philosophical Salon Frankfurt am Main.

education

Pflug spent his childhood in Berlin and Silesia , saw the end of the war in the Upper Palatinate , attended secondary school in Cham and graduated from high school there in 1953. He studied chemistry in Würzburg and at Saarland University in Saarbrücken , where he graduated with a diploma in 1961 and obtained his doctorate in 1964.

Basic research

After completing his doctorate, Pflug worked for a year as a research assistant under Friedrich Becker on thermochemical equilibrium systems. Under GC Benson he continued his work in thermochemistry as part of a research fellowship from the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa as a postdoctoral fellow from 1965 to 1967. After another year of research at Saarland University , Pflug switched to industry in 1968.

Industrial activity

Pflug gained industrial experience , particularly in water chemistry , for several years at SBCI StandardBrands, Dover (Delaware), Metallgesellschaft, Frankfurt / Main, Giulini brothers, Ludwigshafen (Rhine). In 1973 he took up the position of chief chemist at the power producer Preußenelektra (EON) in Hanover. The field of power plant chemistry included planning, operation and supervision of the power plant laboratories. Pflug represented the company's interests in specialist committees, primarily at VGB (Association of Large Power Plant Operators). For several years he was chairman of the chemistry committee at the power plant. In 1999 he retired from active service, but worked for a few years as a consultant in power plant chemistry working groups and organizations (IAPWS; EPRI, ESKOM). Pflug made decisive contributions to the modernization of power plant chemistry. In his sphere of influence, he ensured the construction of effective systems for the integrated treatment of the various power plant wastewater. He developed chemical and biological processes for the elimination and recovery of ammonia. At a time when new analytical measuring devices were appearing on the market, he encouraged their testing in power stations and implemented improvements in measuring technology. When in the 1990s the saving of personnel without consideration was pushed more and more, Pflug developed a system for the automatic analytical monitoring of the power plant processes, in particular the water-steam cycle, the raw water and waste water treatment and the cooling water cycle. The physical-chemical laws could be consistently applied to the high-purity medium of the water-steam cycle. The automatic monitoring was installed for the first time in the Rostock power plant (Rostock system).

The work of Pflug and his colleagues is documented in a large number of publications. Most of it appeared in the 1990s. In recent years and still in retirement, he has dealt with the technical and psychological causes of operational disruptions. He concluded: From the blueprint to operation - it's all human error. After his experience in southern Africa, he developed a didactic method for young technicians to learn and deal with industrial processes: Learning by Playing.

Literary activities

Since the 1990s, Pflug has been writing fiction under the name of John D. Wolfringer. His subjects are mainly located in distant foreign countries: Australia, the USA, Canada, South America, South Africa - and in antiquity. They trace his paths, professionally and privately. How does that fit together: a thoroughly committed scientist and technician who writes novels and short prose on the side - and one topic has nothing to do with the other? Pflug says: I've always seen my life from the perspective of a writer.
