Hans Förster (at the age of 80)

Hans Förster (born February 9, 1885 in Hamburg ; † April 22, 1966 there ) was a German graphic artist, draftsman and writer. In his colored woodcuts he recorded the vanishing old country life in the Hamburg marshland , especially in the Vierlanden and the Altes Land .

Life

Förster was introduced to the art of drawing at an early age by his father Christian (1826–1902), a well-known Hamburg painter and press illustrator. After studying at the Hamburg School of Applied Arts , he continued his training in Berlin with Emil Orlik (1870–1932). Here he received a lot of suggestions that shaped his artistic style.

He moved his residence to Neuengamme and was able to artistically depict the Vierlande, their people, buildings and customs. To this end, he also dealt with the history of the landscape and published a number of illustrated books on the subject. He also published novels, poems and stories, often in Low German. Some of his folk paintings were circulated as postcard prints. The economic success was low, and Förster developed into a loner with a "clearly shown bitterness in old age". Förster was a member of the Hamburg Art Association and the Hamburg Art Association .

The main part of his estate is now in the Altona Museum . The Museum for Bergedorf and the Vierlande owns a number of prints.

Afterlife

The Hans-Förster-Bogen in Hamburg- Nettelnburg is named after the artist.
