Johann "Hans" Grotegut (born March 7, 1939 in Warendorf ; † July 18, 2014 in Bonn ) was a German cyclist and pacemaker .

Athletic career

Hans Grotegut's father was already a cyclist, and the son started cycling at RSV Wesseling in the mid-1950s . Later Grotegut moved to RC Adler Cologne ; Because of his height of 1.88 meters he got the nickname dä Lang . In 1960 he was together with a team of this club German runner-up in the team pursuit and the same year third in the team time trial at the national championships on the road. The following year, the RC Adler team with Grotegut took second place in the German championship in the team time trial. During these years he was a member of the German national team, competed several times in international competitions and was already scheduled for participation in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo .

In spring 1962, Grotegut crossed the finish line first with a clear margin at the Cologne – Schuld – Frechen cycle race and was already celebrated as the winner. However, the victory was denied to him because he had made the icy circuit of his bike work again with the help of a spectator's screwdriver while stopping at a closed railway barrier. Accepting outside help was forbidden under the rules of the time. Annoyed by this decision, Grotegut sold his racing bikes and ended his cycling career.

Grotegut was a trained art fitter and worked after his apprenticeship until his retirement at the Rheinische Olefinwerke (later Lyondellbasell ) in Wesseling .

At the end of the 1970s, Hans Grotegut returned to active cycling as a steadfast pacemaker. Together with the American Wally Summers , he drove races and record attempts, in which the team set numerous American records. At the European Championships of the International Human Powered Vehicle Association , he took bronze twice. In the cycling district of Cologne, Hans Grotegut held various offices as a youth warden, road warden or member of the competition jury and was involved in the organization of Cologne – Schuld – Frechen.
