biography

Gyenis was born in 1873 in Üszög in what was then Austria-Hungary as Johann Gyenis. His baptismal name was Johann, but his call and stage name was "Hans" Gyenis.

He studied at the Munich Art Academy with Wilhelm von Diez . He was enrolled at the academy on April 1, 1901. From 1901 to 1905 he also worked as an illustrator for the Munich weekly magazine Fliegende Blätter . His works, watercolors and drawings from Alexandria are dated and signed between 1905 and 1907. In Csoboka (south of Sumony) he made and signed watercolor works in 1904. In August 1910 he painted Die Dascha on the railway line, a landscape motif in his place of birth, Üszög . Evidently from June 1920 to September 1921 he drew for the well-known Munich art and literary magazine Jugend .

Hans Gyenis married Mathilde Gyenis born on November 19, 1907. Lutz, in Munich. The marriage had a son, Hans Gyenis (January 19, 1909 - May 2, 1945).

The works of Hans Gyenis can be traced back to 1926 in Munich and Pécs, the exact time of his death is not known.

Works (selection)

In the period from June 16, 1915 to March 25, 1919, Hans Gyenis can be traced back to his signed drawings at the locations of the prisoner-of-war camps Somorja, Dunaszerdahely and Leles'z. There were prisoners from the tsarist army, mostly Russians and Serbs, in the camps. Hans Gyenis made, dated and signed charcoal portrait drawings of prisoners of war there. He provided these drawings with the prisoners' personal data (name, camp, regiment, origin, age, marital status, children, arrest).

The scope of the complete oeuvre of Hans Gyenis is still manageable with the pictures known today, although other titles have come down from auction records. Near the Loreley rock, in Sankt Goar am Rhein near Gertrude Gyenis, other watercolor works of art and drawings of prisoners of war have been preserved for posterity.

His watercolors from Alexandria are among the best-known works by Hans Gyeni, but he is also known for his signed drawings, caricatures and illustrations.
