After graduating from high school in 1959 at the Stiftisches Humanist Gymnasium in Mönchengladbach, he studied medicine in Tübingen, Vienna, Berlin and Münster. The time as a medical assistant and theoretical training at the Pathological Institute and the Diabetes Research Institute (Biochemistry) of the University of Düsseldorf was followed by further clinical training in internal medicine at the Hanover Medical School in 1971: 1975 recognition as a doctor for internal medicine and gastroenterology , 1976 senior clinical physician, 1977 habilitation and venia legendi for internal medicine, 1982 apl. A significant part of Huchzermeyer's scientific work deals with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract , the liver, metabolic and nutritional problems. He devoted himself to the enzyme diagnosis of liver and biliary tract diseases and the further development of endoscopic procedures in adults and children. Using morphological methods, he investigated progressive myoclonus epilepsy (Lafora disease), an autosomal recessive disease with deposition of polyglucosan in cells of various organs. For the first time, he demonstrated the storage material in the myocardium and liver using electron optics. With biochemical methods he contributed to the characterization of the New Zealand obese mouse and was able to show analogies to the human metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes with this polygenic model. "Internal diseases and pregnancy", this topic forms a further focus of work. To date, 20 journal articles and 12 book articles as well as 3 monographs have been published.
