Hans J. Moor

Hans Jakob Moor (born June 11, 1933 in Zurich ; † January 25, 2009 in Bassersdorf ) was a Swiss cell biologist.

Moor studied natural sciences at the ETH Zurich from 1952, graduating in 1956 and received his doctorate in 1958 under Albert Frey-Wyssling , whose assistant he was. In 1964 he qualified as a professor and in 1967 he became assistant professor for molecular biology, 1970 associate professor and 1973 full professor for cell biology at the ETH Zurich. In 1996 he retired. Later he dealt with philosophy of biology.

In 1961, together with Kurt Mühlethaler , he developed the freeze-etching technique in electron microscopy , with which the ultrafine structure of cells could be better examined. In 1967 he and Mühlethaler received the Marcel Benoist Prize .
