Hans Jakob Wörner (chemist)
Hans Jakob Wörner (born March 13, 1981 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German-Swiss physical chemist . He is a professor at the ETH Zurich .
Wörner studied chemistry at the ETH Zurich with a diploma in 2003 and a doctorate in 2007. In his dissertation (High-resolution spectroscopic studies of non-Born-Oppenheimer effects) , which he completed with Frédéric Merkt , he dealt with phenomena that do not go through the Born-Oppenheimer approximation can be described and which he examined with high-resolution laser spectroscopy in the extreme ultraviolet. He was able to solve an important spectroscopic problem. Thanks to an original description of the geometric phase in the molecular tunnel effect , he was able to assign the rotationally resolved spectra of the methane cation (CH4 +) and its isotopomers (CH3D + and CD3H +) for the first time. As a post-doctoral student he was at the Laboratoire Aimé Cotton of the CNRS in Orsay with Christian Junge and at the Joint Laboratory of Attosecond Science in Ottawa with Paul Corkum . In 2010 he received a professorship from the Swiss National Science Foundation at the Laboratory for Physical Chemistry at ETH Zurich. In 2013 he was given a permanent professorship. There he is group leader of the Atto group (Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Attosecond Science).
With his research group he was one of the first to observe the subfemtosecond quantum dynamics of electrons in molecules, in particular the charge migration in an ionized molecule and the ionization dynamics of molecules on the attosecond scale.
