Hans Karl (born June 20, 1935 in Heilbronn ) is a Swiss chess journalist and chess player.

Life

Hans Karl, who grew up in the Heilbronn district of Böckingen , first played for SV 23 Böckingen as a teenager , later for SV Heilbronn and won the Heilbronn city championship five times between 1950 and 1956, has a brother and a sister. He has lived in Switzerland since 1958 and participated in various chess tournaments at an early age. Karl worked and learned all professions in the graphic trade. In 1983 he acquired Swiss citizenship and from then on played for Switzerland. For 38 years he played for ASK Sihlfeld, Altstätten and later for the Zurich chess society . For many years he has worked for various chess newspapers such as Rochade Europa, Schach64 or the chess world. Countless reports on chess tournaments and chess players as well as major events have emerged from his pen and have been published. He also edited the Swiss chess newspaper and earlier in-house newspapers in the graphic arts industry.

Success as a chess player

During the decade from 1959 to 1969 he won the Swiss Workers Chess Federation (SASB) cup ten times in a row. He won the duel with the winner Coupe Suisse against Hans Weiss (Zurich). In total, Hans Karl was senior champion eight times (1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2008). He was also twice national individual champion (1974 in Biel and 1977 in Arosa). In 1982 in Silvaplana he was second behind Viktor Kortschnoi in the Swiss individual championship in the main tournament.

With Toyota he won two of the eight Swiss championship titles in the SMM, later he played for Mendrisio, where he was in the squad of the Swiss champions in 2007 but was not used. In 2002 he played in the Swiss Bundesliga for champions Niederrohrdorf. In total, he won over 270 chess tournaments, including 16 times the Zurich City Championship and various blitz and rapid chess tournaments. His highest rating was 2360 in July 1984.
