Hans Konrad Biesalski (born April 14, 1949 in Marburg ) is a German nutritionist and professor of biological chemistry and nutritional science at the University of Hohenheim .

Life

Hans Konrad Biesalski studied medicine at the Universities of Mainz and Bonn. In 1979 he was licensed as a doctor. 1979–1982 Biesalski was an assistant at the Physiological Institute of the University of Mainz in the department of biophysics. He received his doctorate in 1981 and his habilitation in 1986. From 1984–93 he worked at the Institute for Physiological Chemistry at the University of Mainz, and in 1992 as a nutritionist (German Academy for Nutritional Medicine, DAEM). In 1993 he was appointed to the chair of biological chemistry and nutritional science at the University of Hohenheim; he still heads the institute today. He is the Managing Director of the University's Food Security Center. In 2007 he was appointed a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin .

Act

Biesalski carried out work on the importance of vitamin A for the development and function of the inner ear as well as for lung function (maturation and mucosal barrier). In particular, the first-time description of the storage of vitamin A (retinyl ester) in organs and tissues outside of the liver were new findings for research into vitamin A metabolism. In 1995 he was able to prove that in addition to the classic route of distribution of the vitamin from the liver as retinol (vitamin A 1 ) bound to a retinol-binding protein (RBP), there is an alternative metabolic pathway via circulating retinyl esters , previously only known from carnivores : a pair of siblings with a mutation of the gene for RBP and consequently non-measurable blood levels of retinol showed, apart from minor skin changes and night blindness, no visible abnormalities that would be typical of a vitamin A deficiency. In fact, the two young girls had the carnivore route of distribution. Later, Biesalski dealt with questions of the recording and treatment of hidden hunger (micronutrient deficiency) and food security as well as questions of micronutrient deficits and their therapy (especially vitamin C) in intensive care patients. Another experimental field is nutritargeting, which he described in detail for the first time, that is, the development of galenic formulations that allow a targeted supply of nutrients to organs.

Biesalski’s most recent scientific work focuses on: a. Studies of the retinoid metabolism and studies on the importance of vitamins for human health. He leads or is involved in research projects of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research ( BMBF ) on the subject of world hunger and food quality. Biesalski is the editor of fourteen books and published 280 papers. In 2013 he published the book The Hidden Hunger .
